Prototype & Model Overview: The General Electric U18B locomotive was introduced as a branch line road switcher locomotive in 1973 to replace older ALCO road-switchers (RS series). It was the only North American locomotive powered by the 8-cylinder 7FDL engine. While popular with railfans, only a few railroads bought the U18B. With only 163 units built, the U18B became a niche model for GE, mostly purchased by Maine Central and Seaboard Coast Line. The Maine Central referred to their U18B’s as the Independence Class and named their units after revolutionary war heroes. They remained in service until the turn of the century. 

Ten paint schemes for the General Electric U18B locomotives are being offered in this run. Five of the schemes are being produce by InterMountain for the first time. Some of these models were originally announced in 2023, but have been included again in this new announcement. These models feature laser sharp decoration, etched metal and wire-formed detail, and Kadee operating metal knuckle couplers.
