Prototype & Model Overview:

When Amtrak debuted as America's national passenger railroad in 1971, it inherited a vast fleet of passenger cars from legacy railroads across the country. Many of these cars were already life-expired by this time, and the variations in designs acquired by different operators meant that fleetwide maintenance was a nightmare. Amtrak turned to the Budd Company for a modern, effective solution to this problem. Budd had just delivered a fleet of Metroliner® railcars to Penn Central in the years leading up to the creation of Amtrak and would use these cars as the basis for a new fleet of single-level passenger cars to enable consistency in maintenance, and a unified passenger experience across the Amtrak system. Now in its 5th decade of operation, the Amfleet® I series has been recently overhauled for a modern generation of travelers and continues to serve Amtrak on regional and medium-distance trains from coast to coast. Bachmann's HO Scale Amfleet® I models have been updated to complement the recent arrival of ACS-64 and Charger series locomotives. They now display the latest Amtrak paint scheme and graphics and feature new details and an enhanced external appearance. Coachclass, Businessclass, and Cafe examples are available, all featuring fully detailed, lighted interiors, functioning marker lights, and E-Z Mate® Mark II knuckle couplers.
