“Size Does Matter” for Train Control Systems (TCS) Z2 Decoder: March 18, 2010

Most of us who have been involved in DCC for the last 16 years have seen decoders get smaller and smaller and prices go down! Train Control Systems (TCS) has released a a tiny decoder – the Z2 – that will enable users to perform installations into the smaller N scale locomotives much easier than in the past.

Z2 Features

  • 1 Amp motor drive
  • Includes all standard TCS decoder features including: Auto-Adjusting BEMF / Load Compensation
  • Dimensions : 0.51″ X 0.26″ X 0.11″ or 12.95mm. X 6.65mm. X 2.79mm

For example, the Kato N scale Mikado has been very popular with N scalers because of the locomotive’s quality but prior to now there was only room in the tender for installing a decoder. The tender installations necessitated making wire conections between the loco and the tender, a challenging task considering the spaces and connections to work with!

Enter the TCS Z2. Now you can mount this tiny decoder in the locomotive body and not have to do additional wiring between the loco and the tender. The following pictures tell the whole story.

The installation was performed by Lew B., one of our seasoned expert veterans.
