Prototype Overview:

In 1930 the Chesapeake & Ohio stretched the design of an Erie Railroad high-drivered Berkshire type locomotive to produce forty of the C&O T-1 2-10-4s, a Texas type locomotive with 69 inch (1,753 millimeters) diameter drivers that was both powerful and fast enough for the new higher-speed freight services that the railroads were introducing. Capable of pulling 160-car, 13,500 ton coal drags, the C&O T-1s were designed to pull that tonnage from the Ohio River straight through to Toledo. And, they performed that service for more than 20 years. This highly successful design was used by the Pennsy during WWII for their J1 Class locomotives.
