Hi Tony's, I have a layout with 25-30 frogs powered by Tam Valley Frog Juicers. Is the newer PSXX compatible with these? My understanding is the older PSX circuit breakers needed to have the trip speed programmed to a slower value to allow the Frog Juicers to switch before reacting to the momentary short and cutting the current.  The new PSXX appears to have no adjustment for trip speed.  Larry Puckett in his video review of the PSXX mentions an auto-adjustment for trip speed built into the device.  Is this correct?  Will the PSXX work with Tam Valley Frog Juicers without any adjustment? Thanks................Brian

Brian: Yes, the PSXX is compatible with the Frog Juicers. The key is that the PSXX not only trips at the set current, but the PSXX also LIMITS the current into a short to the set value. This means you need to have the current setting on the PSXX higher than the current setting on the Frog Juicer. This should not be a problem since the "Juicer" only ever needs to power one locomotive, while the PSXX needs to power the entire block. Generally speaking, the default setting of the PSXX of 2 amperes should work with your TVFMs, and we generally suggest layouts NOT using NCE Power Cabs or Digitrax DCS52 Zephyrs set the current to 3 or 4 amperes

Since the PSXX limits current, it can hold a fault for a longer time than the older PSX without causing any damage, and the hold times are set accordingly. The built in hold times on the PSXX are longer than the maximum hold time on the PSX, so there is no need to adjust them.

An even better alternative is to use the Frog-AR in conjunction with the PSXX. The Frog-AR is a quad frog reverser that uses the same current limiting technology as the PSXX and can be configured for multiple functions.
