Newly arrived from Atlas for September 2019 are the next run of the NRE 3GS21B Genset II locomotives. While this current run includes MBTA, Amtrak, and others, only the IHB and CSX ones have been delivered thus far. The rest can be expected at a later date.

First introduced in 2006, there have been over 150 NRE 3GS21B locomotives constructed, the majority of which are owned by Union Pacific and BNSF. This latest run from Atlas focuses on some of the smaller fleets. CSX owns 16 and IHB owns 4.

The detailing is good and includes things not normally seen in the Trainman line, such as separate wire grab irons, MU cables, air hoses, and cab sunshades. The paint colors are vibrant and the lettering is crisp.

Internally, these models have the same reliable drive that Atlas is known for. They are available with a factory installed ESU LokSound 5 21-pin decoder and LED lighting, which includes front and rear ditchlights.

For the prototype modeling crowd: While certain aspects of these models leave a lot to be desired, they can easily go from factory-drab to prototype-fab with just a few aftermarket detail parts. So, dust off that workbench, grab your pin vise, and get to work!
