The brass shell and detail parts make this a beauty!

The newest member of Broadway Limited’s Hybrid series is an impressive New York Central 4-8-2 Mohawk. The detailing on the locomotive is superb with many separately applied detail parts and a fully detailed cab interior.

The sound is provided by QSI instead of the Paragon system common now in most new Broadway locos. New sound records were used for this loco and they’re absolutely 1st rate. With an expanded bass record used on the chuff and a charismatic new whistle, that now incorporates a nifty tailing effect.

We had a spare loco in house that we took to an operating session and ran a 37 car coal drag with only the single loco. The loco performed beautifully only needing helper service to get over the hump at the top of one 3% grade.

Another plus, with QSI’s Regulated Throttle Control (RTC), helper service is no longer a derailing nightmare. The performance of this loco dwarfs that of the MTH Mohawk released earlier this year. The ability to program things like momentum and use in a consist is a real joy after running the MTH with its limited programming.

It is unknown why Broadway doesn’t equip these hybrid locos with their new smoke unit, if they had done so there would be absolutely no reason to buy an MTH over this loco.
