Broadway Mikado Comparison

Fred D has submitted his comments and this pulling info comparison on the BLI Mikado 2-8-2.

BLI 2-8-2 Mikado

Tony, I just received the BLI 2-8-2 Mik that was long awaited. I think it was worth the wait. I have just ran it through its paces on my NCE DCC system and worked it flawlessly out of the box. The sound was good but the whistle is excellent. As you described in your short write up NOSTALGIC. I have but two negative comments, no front working coupler and no back uplight. I am sure I can fix the coupler but do not think the back up light is possible.

For your info, I made some crude tests on the pulling capacity of the engine and compared it to an Athearn and Mehano Mik that I also own.

2% 32"r curving grade
BLI 10 cars total car weight 32 oz
Athearn 7 cars total weight 26.5 oz
Mehano 7 Cars total weight 26.5 oz

Straight level track
BLI 23 Cars total weight 79 oz
Athearn 18 Cars total weight 49.5 oz
Mehano 18 Cars Total weight 49.5 oz

Slipping drivers determined the capacity. I think the number of cars being pulled is not as significant as the total weight being hauled (tonnage). I consider that all the cars used were free wheeling, most with metal wheels. The difference in the average weight being pulled was that I had some heavier in the rear of the string which I disconnected to stop the driver slippage. As I said, I am pleased with the product and hope it will stand the test of time.
