The TDS Mini Oval Speaker and some Digitrax SDH164s -
Definitive testing!
An older SDH164 works OK on the Mini and Small Oval speakers.
Both speakers measure a nominal 8 ohms resistance.
The new batch of SDH164 shipped from Digitrax in December fault when used with one Mini Oval, but are OK on the Small Oval. Note I have tested three new decoders on three Mini Ovals, one of which is a
couple of years old, the other two I received late last year, so two
different batches of speakers? All SD164 are OK on the Small Oval.
Resistor test.
10 Ohms as recommended (8) by Digitrax and Norm, the decoder works OK but
the attenuation is not acceptable (i.e. 50%). I also tried a 1 Ohm resistor and that had no effect, I was thinking if it
is an impedance issue rather than resistance, a small increase in "R" may
help. A 2.2 Ohm resistor worked except if the sound power peaked for too long,
like when the horn jammed on, it shuts down.
Given that earlier decoders work on both speakers, it seems that this latest
batch is "different" in some way. For my purposes though, I can use the earlier decoders on this loco that has
the Mini oval, and the new decoder will be used with one or more Small
Ovals.
Best regards,
John
