NCE Switch-Kat Stationary Decoder

NCE Switch-Kat (buy)

General

The NCE Switch-Kat is a stationary decoder designed to work specifically with Kato and LGB remote control turnouts. It contains a single switch interface and measures 2.45 inches by 1.030 inches. It is 0.460 inches high. The Switch-Kat has outputs for switch position indicator lights and it remembers the switch position when power is removed from the layout so that at power on, the indicator lights will show the correct switch position. The address range is 1 to 2044 and there are inputs that allow manual switch operation as well as the normal DCC operation. The Switch-Kat is rated at 1 amp for switch control and 100 mA for position indication outputs.

Feedback

There is no cab bus feedback available.

Programming

Programming is easy and does not require the use of the programming track. The Switch-Kat is designed for programming directly on the mainline. With power off, a jumper is connected from ground to the programming terminal. Track power is applied, and a switch command is issued to the desired address. The jumper is then removed. The Switch-Kat will now respond to the address issued when the jumper was present.

In addition to the address, the on time of the Switch-Kat can be programmed. This requires writing a value to CV 515 and requires that your system have a PROGRAM ACCESSORIES capability. The factory set pulse width is 40 milliseconds. I found this value to work well with a Kato switch. The value can be changed to any value between 0 and 255. The value of 0 will cause the output to be on continuously. While the manual suggests that this is useful for Tortoise™ switch machines, there are other stationary decoders that are a better choice for stall motor operation.

Manual

The manual is short (four pages) but complete. It clearly shows how to install the Switch-Kat to control a switch, how to use manual pushbuttons to control the switch, and how to install incandescent or LED lamps to provide switch position indication. Programming instructions are clear and concise.

Performance

The Switch-Kat performed well. Installation requires only two wires to the track (DCC source) and two wires to the switch. Switch operation was solid with no sticking or hesitation. Position indicators were easily visible, and the position memory feature ensures that the correct switch position is always indicated. Address programming was easy. When you first operate your Switch-Kat, the default switch address is 1.

Recommendations

The Switch-Kat is a limited operation stationary decoder. However, it performs its intended function very well. If you need to interface a Kato or LGB switch to your DCC system, then the Switch-Kat is an excellent choice.
